These are the questions you should ask your mom about her health, according to the experts

All we want is to be able to buy our mom the house of her dreams, fly her around the world, and give her the ability to live forever. But, alas, we are mere millennial mortals with lacking funds and zero access to magic abilities. Instead, we can begin by celebrating our mothers, not just on Mother’s Day, but every day—by checking in on their health and well-being.

How much do you know about your family medical history? Your mother’s medical DNA has a strong connection to the fate of your health and future, so why not spark a conversation to learn more about the health of your mom, and to better understand what your future looks like?

 

We spoke to nationally renowned women’s health expert, author, and radio host, Dr. Jennifer Wider, M.D., who agrees that this is an extremely important conversation to have with your mom.

 

“Far too many people ignore their family history of disease, which can greatly impact their own health and well-being,” she tells HG.

“Understanding patterns of disease can help people understand what diseases and conditions they may be at risk for,” Dr. Wider explains. Therefore, when it comes to talking to our parents, and specifically our mothers, getting down to the nitty gritty is important.

Sexologist and relationship psychotherapist Dr. Carlen Costa explains that we are fortunate to live in a time of openness in regards to sexual health and general health. “[Your mom] may feel embarrassed, not only because some of these topics are not ones that she typically discusses,” Dr. Costa tells HG. “Sometimes parents can feel inadequate when their kids start to parent them—the role reversal can feel overwhelming.”
That’s why we’ve provided you with a list of important topics to talk about with your mom. This will help you better understand her health, and yours as well. Make sure to go about the conversation in a comfortable setting.

1Menopause

 

Your mom may not even know where she’s at in terms of menopause, but it’s always a good idea to check in with her. Dr. Costa says, “Talk to her about what she is experiencing, who she has consulted, and what her self-care plan is at the time.”

Every woman is affected differently by menopause and some have no positive association to it whatsoever. However, it is still something that moms tend to go through alone. They can feel embarrassed and in denial as to why they are feeling this way. Once you open up to them, you may find them opening up to you.

2Sex life

 

Talking to your mother about sex?! Um, yes. Hormonal changes can cause alternations in lubrication, and as women age, they tend to lose their natural ability to lubricate. Talking to your mom about sex, sexual health, and sex toys can be a really incredible experience that brings closeness.

 

Dr. Costa explains that “sex tech has come a long way” since the 1980s Hitachi (although, still a classic). This isn’t to say that you’ll be the one teaching your mom about the present day world of sex. Who knows? You may learn a thing or two from your mom.

“Take the lead, show her around, laugh, bond, and have a great time not just being a supportive daughter, but being a fiend that might help spark the later years of her life,” says Dr. Costa.

3Family health history

 

Knowing about type-2 diabetes, heart problems, breast or ovarian cancers, mental health problems, or eye problems can be beneficial to your future as an adult, as well as the future of your own family (if that’s what you want one day).

 

Knowing the ins and outs of your medical health line can keep you safe and up to date on any necessary vaccinations. Furthermore, make sure you know what you want from the conversation. It may come as a surprise to learn about any medical hiccups in your ancestry. Nevertheless, knowledge is power! Take what you learn to modify your lifestyle and chat with your doctor about reducing any pertinent risks.

 

In the past you may have brushed off a lot of conversations with your mom. “It can wait!” you probably told yourself. But this, this one can’t wait. Consider this as a moment of unification for mother and daughter. Celebrate your mother this month by making sure she’s safe, healthy, and aware.
